Emerald is a chromium-bearing emerald green beryl of the hexagonal crystal system. The specimen is a slightly bluish green square table; the crystals are hexagonal, with longitudinal stripes on the columnar surface. It is transparent, glassy, with a hardness of 7.5 and a specific gravity of 2.72. The vividness and brightness of its color depend mainly on the content of chromium oxide and iron oxide. The more iron oxide it contains, the darker the color becomes, and it is the most important and valuable gemstone of the beryl family. It is one of the "Five Kings" of the gemstone world.
