Sapphire is a variety of corundum mineral, a generic term for corundum gems of all colors except ruby, and is a tripartite crystal oxide mineral. The specimen is a bright blue faceted type, transparent, with a glassy luster. It has an undeveloped solution and a Mohs hardness of 9, second only to diamond. It is named after the trace elements of iron (Fe), titanium (Ti) and manganese (Mn), and is blue, sky blue, green, yellow and colorless. In terms of quantity mined, alluvial ores lead the way. Sapphire is a high-grade stone, one of the "five kings" of the gemstone world. It is regarded as a symbol of loyalty and virtue, and is the birthstone of September.
